Before the word was written - it was spoken
Whether for stage, screen, or radio, I believe sound and storytelling are deeply connected. Long before stories were written down, they were spoken aloud. Our voices exist within a constant sonic flux that shapes how we experience and understand the world.
This connection between sound and narrative drives my work as a sound designer and composer. Sound is fluid and intangible - less contained than other senses - and can be shaped to guide emotion and meaning. A single sound can suggest longing, fear, nostalgia, or hope; many sounds together can form harmony or chaos. The sea and the city are not so different, both are made from countless individual sounds.
Collaboration sits at the heart of my practice. I began singing in a church choir at age six, and ever since, making sound has felt like starting a conversation: with myself, or with others. I’ve been fortunate to collaborate with inspiring musicians, filmmakers, sound designers, and artists throughout my career.
Theatre was an early and important space for these conversations. I’ve worked with theatre groups in Cambridge and London, including as musical director, composer, and performer with Butterfly Theatre on productions of The Tempest, Macbeth, and As You Like It, touring the UK in caves and other non-traditional spaces.
Studying audio production in Cambridge expanded my understanding of sound beyond music into soundscape and collage, an approach that continues to inform my work in radio art. In 2020, I further developed this practice through a Sound and Sonic Arts master’s module at the University of the Arts Helsinki, where exploring sound as a tactile medium particularly resonated with me.
I composed and directed A Fenland Symphony, an experimental project commissioned through BBC New Creatives, funded by Arts Council England, and broadcast on BBC 6 Music in 2021. The work has since featured at the Cambridge International Arts Festival and several European radio festivals.
Now based in Helsinki, I work across southern Finland on audio and sound production. Recent projects include the award-winning short film Nuuskakeikka, sound art pieces Rhapsody Park, Temenos Interrupted, and sound work for commercial film, radio and game production companies. Finally, a brand new horror podcast for Yle is now in preproduction - watch this space.
You’ll usually find me in my sound studio in Pitäjänmäki. Tervetuloa!
